   philosopher
   Born in Paris, Léon Brunschvicg, as a philosopher, rejected positivistic empiricism and spiritualism, and adopted a critical idealist position in his studies on the conditions and evolution of the scientific spirit. Considering reason as a legislative activity that puts forth and perfects its principles and demonstrable rules, Brunschvicg saw in mathematics his most perfect expression (Les Étapes de la philosophie mathématique, 1912; Les Âges de l'intelligence, 1922; L'Expérience humaine et de causalité physique, 1922; Le Progrès de la conscience dans la philosophie occidentale, 1927).
